Handle the animal as little as possible. If possible wrap it in a towel or blanket and place it in a covered cardboard box with holes in it. DO NOT PLACE YOURSELF IN DANGER!
Found a stray dog or cat?
Rescue volunteers cannot pick up lost pets. We are legally not allowed to and we do not have any facility in which to keep them.
A Council pound is the best place for lost pets. That’s where an owner will look and if the animal is microchipped the ranger will call the owner and the animal can be returned home safely and quickly.
During office hours Monday to Friday call: ALBURY COUNCIL: 02 6023 8111
After hours please contact 1300 133 391 (please note that rangers cannot attend after hours call-outs unless the dog is contained and normally will not pick up stray dogs between the hours of 7pm and 7am.)
Greater Hume Shire: Jindera / Culcairn residents call 02 6036 0100 if they find a stray or need to speak with the rangers.
WODONGA COUNCIL: 02 6022 9300
What else can you do?
Take the animal to your closest veterinary clinic. They can scan it for a microchip and call the owner if the details are up to date.
There is also a Facebook page called: ANIMALS LOST AND FOUND ALBURY WODONGA
This may be helpful in the short term, over a weekend for instance, but it is illegal to hold an animal that does not belong to you for longer than is absolutely necessary.
Many people do not have Facebook, or even a computer or mobile device. But they will call local council pounds and veterinary clinics looking for their lost pet.
